What is inspected and why do we inspect?-
Monitoring of degradation of the process equipment and structures, i.e. action can be taken to prevent failure that might result in injury, death or financial loss
- Design should anticipate rate and mode of degradation; i.e. operation often takes place with different conditions, and for longer, than anticipated
- Designers are fallible, and may have made mistakes.
- It may be cheaper to plan for degradation & repair later, i.e. degradation needs to be monitored.
RBI creates a plan giving inspection task per degradation mechanism for each part based on the greatest risk reduction for the least cost. The user must specify the inspection tasks / techniques, their effectiveness at detecting relevant degradation mechanisms, and the cost of application. The results can be manually adjusted for task and timing as desired.
Risk reduction is calculated using Bayesian updating (which is taken care by the software), with the assumption that inspection will show results as predicted by the degradation calculation - i.e. we found what we expected to find.
In addition, detailed inspection plan (work procedure) for each inspection task can be developed if required. This would cover marked up equipment & piping isometric drawings with TML (Thickness Measurement Locations).
